Karl Malden Award for Excellence:
It just wasn't in the cards for this craggyfaced, bulbous-nosed actor to become a matinee idol, but he's done pretty well for himself as a supporting player, limning a string of memorable characters in prestigious films made during the past five decades. He won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his characterization of Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951, reprising his role from the Broadway production) and was nominated for his turn as Father Barry in On the Waterfront (1954). A commanding screen presence, Malden enriches every film in which he appears, and invariably brings his innate dignity to every role he tackles. He starred in the 1972-77 TV series "Streets of San Francisco" and was for many years a commercial pitchman for American Express ("Don't leave home without it!"). In recent years he has been active in madefor-TV movies, many of which he's carried almost singlehandedly; in 1985 he won an Emmy for his performance in Fatal Vision Malden has also served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
